Started in 1995, the Ceilidh at the Creamery was performed in the Creamery building which was acquired by the Strait Area Waterfront Development Corporation in 1994. The building is actually located on the former site of the Hawkesbury Creamery and hence the name. The Hawkesbury Creamery was the largest creamery in operation in Cape Breton during the 1920's - 1940's. The creamery operated by a co-op and was known as the Gateway Cooperative Services. (Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia - **A Glimpse of the Past**) This hall was originally a building supply warehouse for many years then a wholesale warehouse before being acquired by the SAWDC. Extensive renovations were completed in 1995 and it has since become one of the cornerstones of the Port Hawkesbury waterfront improvement efforts begun in 1992. In January, 2007 Isle Madame Confections Ltd took over the Creamery building to convert it to a chocolate factory. Unfortunately, the down turn in the economy played a factor with Isle Madame Confections Ltd and they close their doors in December 2008. The SAWDS is presently renovating the existing building and hope to have it operational for the 2010 Ceilidh season. |
